About

A focused, subspecialty practice in eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery.

I'm Chris Schulz, a consultant ophthalmologist with a substantive subspecialty practice in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery, based at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

Portrait of Mr Chris Schulz

My day-to-day practice combines all aspects of functional, reconstructive and cosmetic eyelid surgery, lacrimal (tear-duct) surgery and orbital surgery, including thyroid eye disease and orbital decompression. I co-lead the joint lacrimal service at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and established a dedicated service for orbital decompression in patients with severe and sight-threatening thyroid eye disease. I am part of a regional multidisciplinary team for peri-ocular skin cancer, working closely with dermatologists and maxillofacial surgeons to provide the full range of skin cancer surgery (including Mohs).

Before my consultant appointment in 2023 I completed over four years of dedicated oculoplastic training across Portsmouth, Southampton, Salisbury, and East Grinstead, followed by a 12-month fellowship in Brighton. That training period gave me extensive experience of eyelid malposition, periocular oncology, lacrimal disease, orbital disease and trauma.

Alongside clinical work, I am Digital Lead and Undergraduate Co-lead for Ophthalmology at Portsmouth, and faculty on national cadaveric courses in endoscopic lacrimal and periocular reconstruction. I'm also a Design Authority member and Chair of the Reporting & Analytics Working Group at Apperta CIC, the not-for-profit behind OpenEyes, the open-source electronic patient record used in many UK ophthalmology departments.

My research interests sit at the intersection of clinical oculoplastics and digital innovation. With colleagues I've developed two patient-reported outcome tools for tear-duct disease (the TEARS and WEQOL scores) and led work on the automated measurement of eyelid position from video using artificial intelligence, for which we received international recognition. To bring data and clinical practice closer together, I completed a Master's in Data Science, Technology and Innovation at the University of Edinburgh in 2024.

I aim to bring the same considered, methodical approach to every consultation. I am committed to taking the time to understand the functional and aesthetic goals of all my patients, to provide honest and realistic treatment aims, and to work with you to deliver the results you desrve.

“Calm, considered care from someone who clearly does this every day.”
