Where I am
I am a consultant ophthalmologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, on the northern edge of Portsmouth, where I have been a substantive consultant since 2023. My subspecialty practice is oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery: the eyelids, the tear drainage system and the socket around the eye.
This is not a satellite clinic. It is where I consult, where I operate, and where my weekly lists run. It is also the regional centre for this kind of surgery, which is worth understanding if you are weighing up your options locally.
Why the unit matters
Portsmouth runs the largest oculoplastic service in the region. There are three consultant oculoplastic surgeons here, more than any other unit nearby, and the service takes over a thousand new referrals a year across Portsmouth, south east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
That scale changes what is possible. We run the only joint periocular oncology multidisciplinary team meeting in the region, which puts Mohs surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons around one table for eyelid cancers rather than passing patients between separate clinics. We also run the only joint lacrimal clinic in the region, and the highest volume endoscopic lacrimal service, with weekly operating lists that I lead.
For a straightforward upper eyelid procedure, none of that may matter much. For an eyelid cancer near the tear duct, a watering eye that has already had one failed operation, or thyroid eye disease that needs several specialties thinking at once, it matters a great deal.
What I treat
The full range of eyelid and periocular surgery, both functional problems that affect how the eye works and cosmetic ones that affect how it looks:
- Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery for hooded lids and under eye bags
- Ptosis correction for a drooping upper eyelid
- Entropion and ectropion repair for in-turning and out-turning lids
- Watery eye assessment and scarless endoscopic tear duct surgery
- Thyroid eye disease, including orbital decompression
- Eyelid skin cancer excision and reconstruction
- Eyelid lumps and cysts, including chalazion and styes
Getting here
Queen Alexandra Hospital sits at PO6 3LY, just off the A27, so you do not need to drive into the city centre. From most of Portsmouth and Havant it is a short trip. From Hayling Island allow around 20 to 25 minutes, and from Gosport around 25 to 30 minutes by road via Fareham.
There is a multi-storey car park on site with accessible bays at the main entrances, and frequent bus routes from Portsmouth, Cosham and Havant. Cosham railway station is a short bus ride away.

For private care, contact my secretary Gina Stacey. A referral letter from your GP or optometrist is helpful but not essential if you are paying for yourself. If you are using insurance you will need both a referral and a pre-authorisation code from your insurer. I am recognised by Aviva, Allianz, Alliance Healthcare, Bupa and Vitality.
